The Benefits Of Motherwort

Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) has been used as a traditional remedy all over the world. It is a potent herb that benefits of motherwortbenefits problems with the heart related to anxiety and nervousness. The tea is made from it’s dried flowers and leaves and makes a fragrant, bitter tasting tea. It is also very powerful in tincture form. Which ever way you use it, there are many benefits to Motherwort. It can act as a sedative and nervine herb to calm the nervous system and promote sleep. It can also nurture the liver and the heart. Mostly, it is helpful to females for menstrual problems and menopause symptoms.

Motherwort got it’s name from benefiting mothers and women in general. Women can take the herb during pregnancy to treat false labor pains and bring a calming feeling during labor because of it’s sedating qualities. Although, you should not take this herb while pregnant unless told by a doctor because it can stimulate uterine contractions. It can also be used for menstruation by stimulating a delayed cycle or to help some menstrual disorders. More benefits of Motherwort can include alleviating stress, tension and anxiety related to PMS and menopause.

How does Motherwort provide all these benefits? Like many other anxiety herbs it contains active phytochemicals in the plant. These include:

The latin name for Motherwort comes from the plant’s beneficial properties for the heart. Used for psychological distress or heart issues including rapid heart beat or tension to the heart because of stress, phobias, anxiety, and anger. It is also known to lower your blood pressure and improve circulation. People have frequently said that taking this herb has a very uplifting effect on the heart.

Motherwort Tea

To make a cup of Motherwort tea you should use 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb. Put into one cup of boiling water for 10 minutes. The taste is very bitter so you may have to get used to it first. It is recommended that you drink the tea daily but have no more than 3 cups per day. You can blend it with peppermint to make a bit more enjoyable.
