Herbs for High Blood Pressure

There are many factors that can lead to high blood pressure. It can be a genetic thing or many things in our lifestyle. Lots of stress, anxiety, obesity, too much salt, alcohol, and smoking are the main factors. If you don’t do something about it you may end up having a heart attack. According to the American Heart Association almost one out of three Americans has high blood pressure. Therefore many people are taking something to lower their blood pressure these days and natural herbs for high blood pressure are becoming more and more popular.

I have come across many herbs that have been said to lower blood pressure. There are still many studies being done to validate these herbs further now that they are becoming popular worldwide for blood pressure and other illnesses. These include:

  • Garlic – Sulphides that are present in garlic assist in blood pressure management. Has been shown to lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and helps keep the blood flowing freely and widens the arteries.
  • Hawthorn Berry – This herb opens the coronary arteries, allowing the blood to flow freely and prevents the arteries from hardening. Also helps strengthen the heart muscle.
  • Olive Leaf – The extracts of the leaf are used for an irregular heartbeat and to normalize blood pressure.
  • Turmeric - An Indian herb that contains curcumin which has antioxidant properties to help the blood flow and strengthen the blood vessels.
  • Gingko Biloba – This directly improves the blood circulation to lower blood pressure. It also increases the flow of blood to the brain area and improves memory.
  • Ginger – Helps improve blood circulation, leading to lowering blood pressure. Also relaxes the muscles around the blood vessels and lowers cholesterol.
  • Maitake – A Chinese mushroom used in lowering cholesterol levels.
  • Ashwagandha – A popular herb for blood pressure that is also used as a herb for anxiety. Counteracts high blood pressure thus, lowering it. (click for more)
  • Cinnamon – Reduces the levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) in the body because of the antioxidants it contains.

Those were the most popular herbs for high blood pressure I found. Others also include Gotu Kula, Skullcap, Valerian, Nutmeg, Holly Leaf, and Daikon Seed

Remember to always consult a doctor before using any herbs or herbal remedies. Especially if you are already on medication for blood pressure or other ailments. These herbs could cause harmful effects when combined with prescription drugs. Although, the first 3 that I listed (Garlic, Hawthorn, and Olive Leaf) are considered safe even if you are on a medication. You can usually get them in supplement form or tea. Also, just generally cooking more with Garlic can help tremendously.
