Herbal Eye Pillow
I’ve heard about more and more people using herbal eye pillows these days (also known as herbal headache pillows). They have many beneficial effects to your sleep all night long. Basically these are regular eye pillows that you put on your eyes when you sleep to keep light out, but filled with herbal fragrances and made from organic cotton, silk, satin or flannel. They are known to enhance your physical, mental, and spiritual balance while you sleep.
Herbal eye pillows are usually filled with organically gown herbs and grains so that you breath in a refreshing smell. All the herbs and grains are grown organically so you don’t breath in pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers. Therefore, herbal pillows are usually found containing:
- Peppermint – The leaves have a unique oil that is known to relieve sinus congestion, nausea, headaches, and migraines. Please be aware that children or infants should not inhale peppermint.
- Lavender – Contains a balancing aroma to alleviate headaches and migraines. It can also enhance calmness and reduce stress.
- Spearmint – Enhances calmness and improves concentration with it’s sweet aroma.
- Flaxseed – Can be heated or cooled to make it a therapeutic element. Gives you a relaxed condition while you sleep and helps you refresh your mind. Also known to reduce eye puffiness.
- Eucalyptus – This has a fragrant oil that can alleviate pain, sharpen the senses, reduce depression and anxiety, and promote circulation in your body.

How To Make A Herbal Eye Pillow
- Make 2 pieces of breathable fabric, like organic cotton, silk, satin or flannel, the same size. Whatever size you think is good for you.
- Sew 3 sides of the fabric together tightly leaving one side open for you to put the fillers in and sewing it inside out (with the design on the inside). You want to make sure it is sewn tight so nothing falls out. Then flip it back to the normal side with the design out.
- Next you will need flaxseed filler and dried herbs. You’ll want to mix these together in a plastic bag or storage container. As much as you would like. Just don’t make it too strong of a smell because that could lead to more headaches.
- Now pour the mix into the fabric that was sewn. Careful not to fill it up too much because you still need to close it.
- Now sew the last two pieces together tightly.
- Squeeze the pillow several times to bring out the fragrance of the dried herbs. Then put it into an airtight bag and let it sit for at least a day to allow the scent to strengthen.
How To Use Your Herbal Eye Pillow
You can put the herbal eye pillow on your eyes while you sleep but if you are not comfortable that way, I’ve even tried it just in my pillow case and it works well too. You can also heat or cool the pillow before use. Warm it in the microwave for a few minutes to relieve your headache or stress. Also, try putting it in the refrigerator or freezer for headaches, eyestrain and more. It’s up to you if you want the cool effect or the warm. Give them both a try and see what you like.
