Ashwagandha Herb
Lots of research has been done lately on the Ashwagandha (Latin: Withania somniferous) anxiety/depression herb. This is an Indian herb also known as Winter Cherry, Withania, Asgandh, and Indian ginseng. This small shrub can grow to a height of 2-3 feet and contains clusters of tiny green and yellow flowers and red raisin sized fruits. Considered a member of the pepper family. Ashwagandha grows in the drier parts of Western India, Northern Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. Every part of this wonderful plant can be used for medicinal purposes. It is known to strengthen the body and give energy. The berries, leaves, and roots aid in restoring muscles, body tissues and even bone marrow. How To Use Ashwagandha Herb
Ashwagandha herb can be available as a tincture, dried roots and leaves, powder, decoctions, capsules, essential oils and teas.
- Tea: Boil 1 oz. of Ashwagandha root in 1 cup of water for 15-20 minutes. You should drink up to 2 cups a day.
- Milk Decoction: Combine 1 oz. of the root, 4 cups of water and 1 cup of milk. Should be heated until the water has evaporated over a low flame. Could be from 30 minutes up to 2 hours. Add sugar or honey to sweeten up. You should drink 2 cups a day.
- Medicated Oil: Combine 2 oz. of crushed Ashwagandha leaves, 1 cup of castor oil and 4 cups of water. Should be heated over a low flame for 4-8 hours of until water has evaporated.
- Compress: Make the herb tea, soak a clean cloth in the tea and apply directly to the affected wound.
- Tincture: Should be a dosage of 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of tincture daily.
- Capsules: Should be a dosage of 300 mg of powdered root taken once or twice a day.
Unlike any kind of prescription drug you would take to cure these ailments, Ashwagandha herb has no harmful side effects. But there are a few situations you should be careful of. It is not recommended to use if you are pregnant and the berries should not be eaten because they can cause severe gastrointestinal pain. Furthermore, it has a sedative effect on the central nervous system, therefore, if you are drinking alcohol or any other central nervous system sedatives you should not be consuming this herb at the same time. Lastly, you should always consult a medical professional if you plan on using Ashwagandha, especially if you are on any other types of medication already as these could cause some kind of side effect.
